Sandy is a town in Salt Lake County in the state of Utah. The city offers a plethora of attractions such as multiple entertainment destinations, state of the art movie theaters, and a bustling commercial corridor. It also has remarkable family friendly Amphitheater, beautiful ski resorts, pristine biking trails, recreational parks, golf courses and the Ultimate Base Camp. Even though the origin of the name Sandy remains unclear, the history of the sixth-largest city in Utah dates back to the 1860’s. At about that period, the first permanent settlers moved to the southern end of Salt Lake Valley, because it was not as crowded as the other surrounding areas. What shaped Sandy City’s initial years, was the existence of the silver mining industry in Little Cottonwood Canyons. It inspired the entrepreneurial minded to set up hotels, salons, and famous smelters like the Saturn, Mingo, and Flagstaff.
Later on, thanks to the silver mining trade, the railroad, and streetcar line came to be. They facilitated the transportation of locals, ore, and other commodities, in and out of the settlement.
In the 1890s however, the mining industry faltered forcing the resilient Sandy Utah residents to transform into an agricultural community. In 1983, the city got incorporated in a bid to combat the “unsavory” elements in the society.
From then to date, the ancient rural town dramatically evolved. It boasts of a vibrant, youthful and family oriented population, which owns some of the best recreational, residential and business destinations in the region.
Currently, the Sandy government is working on the Cairns redevelopment project. Through these upgrades, the authorities will transform the city’s downtown into a resort-style city center, which houses state of the art office towers and high-rise multifamily residences. The plan also includes the addition of enjoyable amenities like multi-use trails, the Hale Center, and refurbishment of the South Towne Exposition Center.
